We decided for Charli's 4th birthday, we wanted to get her a Bible. She loves looking at ours but it is all make believe because she isn't reading, yet. So, I went on the hunt for the perfect Bible for her. I asked my FaceBook friends and then I headed to Borders to make a purchase. After sitting on the floor for nearly and hour and looking at the plethora of children's Bibles, I settled on The New Bible In Pictures for Little Eyes by Kenneth N. Taylor.
According to online reviews, this book has been around for 45 years. It has been updated and it is wonderful. It has more stories and goes a little more in depth in some of the principles and truths of the Holy Book. Each story is told in words and concepts that are easily grasped by a young age. It asks questions in the text as well as after. There are usually 3 to 4 review questions at the end of the story (usually about a paragraph or too). I love this concept. I am able to tell if my kids are actually listening and retaining the story.
After the questions, There is a little prayer that you can pray that touches on the key point in the story.it also gives scripture reference. We don't always do this but my kids love to have actual scripture read to them. Sometimes it is fun to do both.
This Bible can be a story book and lots of fun. It has pretty illustrations and is really easy to read. However, I find it a great teaching tool as well. Read the story, read the scripture, review with questions and then an applicable prayer. It is a 4-fold approach to pouring God's truth into your kids in a very intentional way.
I think it is a Bible that can last many years. If you start at the recommended age of 4 (my two year old loves it too though), you can just read the story and questions. As the stories become more familiar, add the scripture reading in as well as the prayer. Any combination will work! I just love the idea that the Bible will grow with them.
As a side note, it was a Gold Medallion Book Award winner.
I wasn't able to grab a pic off the internet in time for this post but it is very easily found through a Google search.
