Digital Mask

Please know that by posting this, I am just making an observation. I am not judging or pointing fingers. I believe I have done this in the past as well. Here goes...

Over the past week, I have noticed decidedly negative posts on Facebook. Who knew that a football game, some musical acts, and a few current pop culture events could strike such obvious venom into our thoughts!

I found myself disturbed by the amount of negative posts as well as how extreme they were. People, teams, places...no one was exempt.

The thing that I found the most interesting was that, these posts, a lot of them, were coming from Godly people whom I respect and love. It got me thinking.

Cyber dating can be scary because you see only what the other person wants you to see. You don't have history or real life to measure them up to in the beginning. Is this how FB is becoming? Because we are only in a digital format, it is ok to let down our guard and spew nastiness? Because we are not in person, it makes it easier?

I am not talking about posts that are factual. It is the editorialized versions that are so mean and unkind. I was just surprised and the volume and ickiness of them all. I noticed this a few months ago as well. I just think it is a line that can be crossed so easily and I have made a promise to myself to be sure I am not spewing unnecessary negative comments in my posts.

Just something I am stewing on.

I totally agree with you. The negative comments on facebook just make the whole thing less fun. I have no problem with someone saying they are having a hard day, but the horrible whining and complaining about something that either has nothing to do with them (super bowl/christina aguilera/politicians) or something they could probably fix makes me go crazy. I try really hard to only be positive (not necessarily sappy and over the top) when I put anything in my status because who am I to spew negativity into someone else's newsfeed.
